I had a conversation earlier this week with someone about archetypes. So I decided to revisit them to see which archetype is playing a dominate role in my life at present.
An archetype, as you probably know, is a concept that Carl Jung used in his theory of the human psyche. Basically he believed that universal archetypes reside within our collective unconsciousness. These archetypes represent the fundamental human structure of our experiences as we evolved over time. The effect is, they evoke deep emotions within us and can be used as a guide for understanding self and others.
Jung defined 12 primary archetypes that he said symbolise our basic human motivations. Each type has it’s own set of values, meanings, and personality types and we tend to have a dominate archetype that forms the basis of our motivations.
I know some people dislike these types of characterisations, but I do think they help as a starting point for self-inquiry.
I’ll share my dominate archetype with you and then give you the link to find your own if it’s of interest to you.
My dominate archetype falls under one of the Soul Types.
Motto: Don’t fence me in
Core desire: the freedom to find out who you are through exploring the world
Goal: to experience a better, more authentic, more fulfilling life
Biggest fear: getting trapped, conformity, and inner emptiness
Strategy: journey, seeking out and experiencing new things, escape from boredom
Weakness: aimless wandering, becoming a misfit
Talent: autonomy, ambition, being true to one’s soul
The explorer is also known as: the seeker, iconoclast, wanderer, individualist, pilgrim.
